Boathouses and covered docks

A roof protects your boat from Arkansas sun and storms. Here's what to know before you build one.

Covered slips keep boats cooler, cleaner and out of the weather. A covered dock can be as simple as a roof on posts over a slip or as involved as an enclosed boathouse with storage.

Roof options

  • Metal roofs are common, durable and light enough for floating docks.
  • Gable or shed styles shed rain differently and affect how the dock looks from the water.
  • Translucent panels let in light over a swim or sitting area.

Height limits on Lakes Hamilton and Catherine

Entergy's single-family facility rules cap deck height at 5 feet and roof height at 15 feet above summertime full pool. Changes to the roofline or roof footprint of a permitted dock need Entergy's prior written approval. Check Lake Ouachita and Hot Springs Village rules separately.

Structural considerations

A roof adds weight and catches wind. The frame, flotation and anchoring need to be designed for it, especially on floating docks in open water. Ask the builder how the dock is designed to handle wind loads.

No living quarters

Entergy's permit conditions say permitted facilities can't be used for human habitation. Plan storage and seating, not sleeping space.

Prices come from the dock builder after they've seen your shoreline. We don't quote prices ourselves, and a phone estimate is only a starting point.
